YOUNG “TOO EMBARRASSED” TO DANCE

The tradition of Morris dancing could die out because young people are too embarrassed to take part, according to the UK Morris association. The Morris Ring, which represents 200 groups across the country, is planning a recruitment drive to get more people involved in the English folk dance. Spokesman Charlie Corcoran said: “There is a distinct possibility that in 20 years’ time there will be nobody left. It worried me a great deal. Young people are just too embarrassed to take part.” Morris dancing involves teams of men and women performing with handkerchiefs, sticks or swords. They often wear silly hats and have bells on their legs.

I’ve seen Morris dancers at a fete and they do look a bit silly when they shake their handkerchiefs and jingle their bells! It would be a shame if it died out though…
