She went to the stage where she had been for the Extrapolation Extraordinary, the first meeting of the Zildiths of Phargon that Dot and her friends had attended, and held up her arms.
“HEAR – ME – NOW!” came the big voice again, making them all jump.
All the Zildiths stopped talking and turned towards her.
“ACCLAIM for Miss Dorothy Com!” said Zamelqa.
“ACCLAIM! ACCLAIM!” went all the Zildiths, immediately forming the rows they had done for Dot’s first Acclaim – as if by magic. Dot wished her head teacher Mrs Rudman could see the sight – it always seemed to take AGES to get everyone organized in rows for Assembly. She’d love this!
It was hard to go – but they had to. Dot held onto Wizzie’s lead and Mr Mouse scrambled up on her shoulder, taking one last swig from his glass (the drink was silver and green this time) and ticking some nibbles into his pocket.
“ACCLAIM! ACCLAIM!” went all the Zildiths again, doing their funny clapping thing. Cruncher was trying it too and getting in a terrible muddle!
Dot took one last look – at the smiling faces of Cambor, Poolbear and Drindel, and Zamelqa the Regent; at Hornbeam’s big grin through his enormous beard; at Cruncher, who’d nearly got the Zildith clapping right now; and at Carvelia and Thoranon, the Children of the Casement, who’d called for help and set them all off on the adventure of Phargon.
She felt a little prickling behind her eyes but she wasn’t going to cry – so EM-BA-RRA-SSING!!
All the Zildiths had fallen silent now and were just standing looking at her. She had to say something – but what? Then, suddenly it came to her.
“Goodbye!” she called. “I’ll never forget you – just like the Zildiths of Phargon never forget!”
“ACCLAIM! ACCLAIM!” went all the Zildiths again, clapping louder than ever.
Click! went Dot on Mr Mouse’s backpack!
ZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSH! They'd been helped on their way back by Samson the Server - beaming away, all healthy and happy again. As he routed them back home, he'd said a last "Thank You VERY VERY much!" so loudly in his big deep voice that Dot could still feel her ears ringing a bit! Wiz yawned and settled down for a BIG scratch. Mr Mouse put his new hat back on straight and settled down in his fave place leaning against the edge of the laptop. He was obviously ready for a nap. I wonder if tea’s ready yet, Dot found herself thinking (REALLY! After all those nibbles!) She popped her glasses back up her nose and ran downstairs, two steps at a time, and went into the living room. Nan was still stuck. “Now if my reading glasses are in the blue case, they can’t be in my bag, because I’d see them, because - ” “MUM!” said Bill Com. “For goodness sake don’t go on! Can’t you just manage without them till you get home?” He started bundling up all the Sunday papers he’d been reading in a rather cross way. PING! Out fell a blue glasses case. Dad had had them all the time! “THERE they are!” said Nan accusingly. “You muddled them up in all those silly papers you insist on having every Sunday! And you’ve been getting all testy with me! Honestly Bill!” “Er… yes… well…” went Bill, going red. “Sorry Mum! I forgot!” EXACTLY, thought Dot, grinning to herself. That’s the whole trouble with memory: you have to remember to remember – whether you’re a Com or a Zildith! Dot’s Mum Suzie shook her head and laughed. “I think I’ll go and make the tea!” she said. Dot handed Nan her glasses. “Did you bake us your special choc cake like you said, Nan?” she asked. “Yes dear!” said Nan with a big smile. “I’d never forget that!”
