Chapter 26 - Hot foot!

"Feel 'em! I mean just feel them! Do they feel hot to you?"

Mr Mouse was holding out one of his paws, waving it about in front of Dot and Wizard with his shoe off. (He's got these cool trainers now... NikeyMouse they're called... they have a special Cheesefinder function, they light up when they smell cheese anywhere near. It's OK till the batteries run out or till the trainer gets so smelly it starts smelling itself and lighting up all the time, yeuchhh!)

Wizzie put his head on one side with his "No I won't" expression on his face, which means he's just NOT going to do what you ask, no matter how hard you try to make him.

"No THANK YOU Mr Mouse" he sniffed. "I'm not touching that, no way!"

Dot gave her doggy friend a look. Couldn't Wiz see that Mr Mouse was really upset?

"OK" she said, and reached out a finger to touch the paw her cheesehunter friend wasn't standing on. She gave it a little stroke.

"Tee hee tee hee!" went Mr Mouse, giggling and hopping back. "Tickle wickle!" He fell over with a clatter on the laptop keyboard.

But it was true - the paw was nice and cool.

"So WHY was your foot getting so hot that it came through the flip-flop's sole and made it stick to the studio floor?" she asked.

Because that was the NEXT disaster that had hit Mr Mouse while he was trying to film the esure.com TV commercial, just to show what he could do so Adrian Webb could decide between him and his cousin - and make one of them a TV star!

"I just have NO idea!" said Mr Mouse, who'd got over his giggling fit after Dot had tickled his foot. "It just happened! See they have this special paint on studio floors that's easy to get off - they have to have that 'cos they often have to make the studio floor different colours for different films. It's OK unless you spill something on it - which is why no-one can bring drinks and stuff onto the set - OR if it gets too hot. Which it did, thanks to my feet in those darn flip-flops!"

"Why were you wearing flip-flops anyway?" asked Wiz. "That's not your style."

"No, it's not" said Mr Mouse. "But that was the costume for the shooting - you've seen it - look!"

He went hip, hop, hip across the keyboard on Dot's laptop and a video came up. It said "Esure commercial - Car insurance. Take 4."

Mr Mouse jumped on the return button and the video started to play. There was Cousin Esure, getting ready to act. Helen the make-up gerbil was just putting some Fluff-Up on his fur and Cousin Esure was checking how he looked in a big mirror being held up by one of the production assistants (a guinea pig with an ENORMOUS tummy called George, if you want to know.)

Cousin Esure pulled his little white T-shirt straight so you could see the words "esure.com" on the front. Then the picture got bigger and there they were - a pair of orange flip-flops, just like the kind you usually wear on the beach.

"Oh! They look just like the ones Dad bought on holiday that time!" said Dot. "But they kept coming off his feet when he was playing beach football and then he lost one. He said - "

"Do you MIND Dot" said Mr Mouse, rolling his eyes. "This is my big tragedy, y'know! Tell me when the book comes out!"

Dot bit her lip, That Mr Mouse, so A-NNOY-ING! Still... it was a sad story, that was true.

"Now, there! " said Mr Mouse, jumping on the space bar to pause the video. "That bit!"

Cousin Esure was dragging a pretend bag of coins across the screen, saying how esure.com could save you loads of money insuring your car. It looked really heavy.

"That's the bit! THAT'S where I always got stuck. Couldn't move!" Mr Mouse said bitterly. "Those FLAMING flip-flops, I could kill 'em. We tried everything - ice cubes on my feet, putting this kinda plastic sock thing underneath - even leaving me with my feet in this little fridge till just before we had to film this bit. Felt a total PUTZ! But NOTHING worked. Except once - and then I hadda SNEEZE, didn't I! Thirty-six takes - I felt such a fool!"

"Was everyone getting cross?" asked Dot. It did sound awful, poor Mr Mouse!

"No, they were all real nice" said Mr Mouse. "But then... Reg arrived... and that was it!"
