Chapter 9: Tell the truth Sykes!
Dot, Wizard and Mr Mouse had Sykes the cyber rat cornered - stuck in a computer at the Eden Project and unable to escape: he hadn't got a stitch on, and his cyber-rat badge had gone with his jacket! Gone too was his cyber rat uniform and in its place was a sorry sight: a pathetic shivering creature doing his best not to show anything he shouldn't. But he was still vicious. Very!
"It's too late!" he snarled. "You'll never stop us now! The Eden Project's as good as dead - we've put a reversal virus in their system and it's doing everything back to front! And it can tell when you're trying to fix it - it just changes all the time, like a cold virus. We've beaten them and their stupid plants!"
Wizzie shook his head slowly. "Oh no" he said softly to the screen. "Oh no you haven't." With that, his paws sped over the keys. Amazed, Dot and Mr Mouse watched as Sykes' cyber badge appeared at the bottom of the screen!
Sykes could see it too, and tried to grab it - remembering only just in time that he hadn't got any clothes on. But he didn't get far anyway. As his ratty little paw got near the badge there was a sparkle and a crack, and he hopped back, shaking his paw as if it had been burnt. Which it had!
But now something else was happening too. The badge had suddenly shrunk. Wizzie nodded, smiling.
"There you are Sykes" he said. "It's your choice. Every time you try that, your badge gets smaller. And after a while, it will shrink anyway. Smaller and smaller and smaller. And you know what happens if it finally disappears ... "
Sykes shook his head from inside the computer like someone trying to get rid of a bad dream. "No... you wouldn't... you couldn't... " he whimpered. "You're the good guys... you wouldn't... "
"Oh yes we would" said Wizard with steel in his voice. "And then you'd be... IN THE RECYCLE BIN - FOREVER!"
Sykes began to run about inside the computer screen in panic. But he just bounced off the sides like a ping-pong ball. And every time he got near his precious badge - the only thing that kept him alive as a cyber rat on the Internet - it got smaller.
And smaller. And smaller. And smaller...
Dot almost felt sorry for him, he looked so pathetic. But time was ticking away. "Come ON Sykes" she said. "Give up! Tell us what we need to know to save the Eden Project - RIGHT NOW!"
