Chapter 7: Rat hunt!

The three friends hurtled down the fibre optic highways of the Internet. They knew that the clock was ticking, and that little time was left if they were to rescue the Eden Project - and save the life of their new friend, the brave little leaf creature Evie Eden.

As they whistled along, Wizard told Dot and Mr Mouse what he'd seen.

"It was Sykes the cyber rat - I'm sure of it! I'd know him anywhere! And whatever he's doing here, he can't be up to any good! But I've got a cyber-trace on him and we aren't far behind - I can hear his cyber-bike!"

Sure enough, above the sound of their own flight through the fibre-optic world, they could hear the whine of a cyber bike - a sound they dreaded because it always meant that something evil was happening on the Internet.

"Where's the bad guy going?" muttered Mr Mouse. But it soon became clear. With the familiar bang and whoosh, the three friends tumbled out of a computer screen onto the floor of a big room full of colourful displays and exhibits.

The room looked like real fun - it was all empty now because the Eden Project had closed for the day, but it had huge picture windows looking out over the giant Biomes, now sparkling with light in the dark of the night. A brightly painted sign, 'Eden Project Visitor Centre', hung down from the ceiling high above their heads.

Just as they landed, they saw a long pink tail slide away and disappear inside one of the displays. "Over there!" said Dot "Come on!" They rushed forward towards the stand - and then stopped dead in their tracks. It was yet another bizarre and amazing sight.

Inside what looked like an ordinary front room in a house, was a life-size family - Mum, Dad, son, dog and cat - all made out of...wood! They were jointed like puppets and standing stock still.

"What is that!" gasped Mr Mouse. Dot looked around wildly, and then ran over to a sign on the side of the display. "It's... it's designed to show what would happen to us all if we had no plants... just like what Evie said... you just press this button here... "

But she didn't need to. With a gentle whirring noise the strange wooden family - and everything in their "room" - began to move. First the "flowers" died. Then some "fruit" that was on a table lifted away. Then the clothes started to come off the members of the family. Forgetting all about Sykes, the gang gazed in amazement at what was happening.

"What... why are they losing all their clothes?" asked Wizard, gazing pop-eyed at the scene.

Dot dashed round to the sign again. "It's because the clothes are made out of cotton and cotton is a plant too, so if we had no plants we'd have no... " She stopped. "This is getting rude!" she said.

It was, rather. By now the wooden mum, dad and son were down to their underpants - and it obviously wasn't going to stop there! But just then Wizard let out a startled bark and leapt up, putting his paws on the glass screen in front of the family in the case. "Look!" he said.

Cowering in the make-believe fireplace was a familiar form. A ratty face under a steel helmet - a tattered leather jacket with a shiny badge... and a set of sharp yellow teeth.

It was Sykes the cyber rat - and he was cornered!
